Dentures in Glyfada
Dentures are artificial prostheses, usually made of acrylic resin (with pink paint for the base and white teeth). They replace the natural teeth that have been lost and help to restore the aesthetics and functionality of the mouth.
Why is it necessary when you lose your teeth?
When natural teeth are lost, the muscles around the mouth atrophy, resulting in:
- the cheeks sinking into the mouth
- the morphology of the lips disappears
- Wrinkles around the mouth deepen and the profile becomes "old".
At the same time, tooth loss affects diet, psychology, sociability, and general health. Artificial whole dentures or gums, restore and improve the external features of the face resulting in the restoration of aesthetics. At the same time, they restore full functionality after pronouncing the restoration of chewing.
What are the different types?
Dentures can be divided into indirect or direct and classic or overlapping. The way in which the above types of complete dentures are separated is the time, the use and the way of construction.
Indirect denture
The indirect denture is the well-known dentition. To be used, possible tooth extractions must be made. Once this is done we will need to wait a period of time, which varies from patient to patient, until the gums heal. Then, there are some appointments that include measurements and rehearsals which allow the patient to see the result and ask for changes so that he is happy with his new denture - gum.
Direct denture
Classic denture
It is the denture that rests on the oral mucosa.
Implant supported denture
The overlapping denture is the denture that rests on dental implants (chewing gum with implants). In order to use an overlapping denture in the lower jaw, 2 to 3 implants will need to be placed. In the case of the upper jaw, 4 implants are needed. The stability of the all-inclusive denture is unquestionably excellent as it relies on implants
How do I take care of my denture?
The way to care a denture is simple and is done with the following steps:
- Brush your dentures at least twice a day.
- When not wearing dentures, place them in a glass of water, unless your dentist advises otherwise.
- If you carry your dentures in a bag, be sure to store them in special storage boxes that will be purchased from the pharmacy.
- Visit your dentist at least once a year to have your dentures checked.
How do i clean my dentures?
- Be sure to rinse your dentures and mouth with plenty of water after each meal.
- Before brushing, rinse them with plenty of water to remove any food residue.
- Brush your dentures at least twice a day.
- Do not use common toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it may damage their surface. To clean them, use soap (eg unscented green soap or dishwashing liquid) and a soft toothbrush.
- You can also use the special toothbrushes for dentures.
- Carefully clean all denture surfaces inside and out
- Clean the gums, palate and tongue with a soft brush and water (without toothpaste or soap).
- It is important to remove food to avoid bad breath and infections.
- Use dentures cleaning tablets daily (or at least twice a week) and follow the instructions on the package.
- If your dentures started to get "blackened", visit your dentist, who will clean them.
How lond does it last?
The dentures start to wear out after a while. The time of onset of wear depends on cleanliness and care. Over the years, their material changes, the anatomy of the mouth changes (the gums fall off) and the dentures no longer fit as well. Also, the teeth wear out from use, they do not articulate properly with each other and the lower third of the face looks unnatural and old.
Your dentist will advise you if your dentures need a base adjustment (filling) or if new ones need to be made. Dentures usually need to be replaced every 5-10 years depending on when the natural teeth were lost and the maintenance they receive. The base adjustment (filling) is done every two years, depending on the case.
